| DISKTRON BEARING Overview
DISK bearing support that was developed 30 years ago in USA is, based on its critical parts applied with polyurethane, a product equipped with excellent durability and outstanding earthquake-proof capability. Structural operation is similar to that of POT support but epoch-making improvement for efflux and damage of rubber plate along with deterioration of durability caused by it that were designated as drawback of POT support has been made. In Korea, standards for function and capability of DISK bearing support was already established on Highway Bridge Specifications in 1999 and are being actively applied to each Regional Construction Management Administration including Korea Expressway Corporation and each Road Management Office of Seoul from 2000. Recently it was applied to TP of Cheonggyecheon Restoration and, as of 2004, its construction was completed on the bridges of Hwanghak and Biwoo.
In addition it is being spotlighted as excellent product in large-scale TP lately contracted. This is again based on the fact that not only capability of DISK bearing support was authorized internationally but also its earthquake support of the min. size in Korea provides some advantage in securing economy of the whole bridge. DISK bearing support is also positively being applied to railway bridge that had been using spherical bearing support only until now.
| Product construction and structural roles

| Fluoro resin plate |
Its friction coefficient of 0.03 μ indicates sliding capability enough for accommodating movement quantity according to temperature expansion of bridge superstructures. This is capability shown in most of bearing supports using fluoro resin plate, inducing more smooth sliding by injecting lubricating oil between fluoro resin plate and stainless plate. |
| Guide block |
This is a device limiting moving direction of bridge superstructures, i.e., operation in bridge axis direction or operation in direction perpendicular to bridge axis. SM490B or steel material equivalent to it is applied. |
| Polyurethane disk |
A device supporting bridge superstructure load and accommodating rotative strain. Allowable bearing stress is 350kg/cm2, about 2.3 times larger than that of general elastic support for bridge. Also, it keeps good endurance period based on its strong resistance against various environmental influence like chemical materials, corrosion and ozone. Most of polyurethane disks is similar to common term of bridge and so there is almost no epair or replacement of bridge bearing support. The size of bearing support is the min. among domestic earthquake-proof supports due to adoption of polyurethane disk with high elasticity and strength. |
| Shearing pin |
A device that delivers load of horizontal direction, a pin of high strength special material. Inserted into middle plate of disk support in screw bolt type, it reinforced convenience and structural stability at the time of maintenance and replacement of bearing support. Section is so decided as to sufficiently resist shearing force considered at the time of disk support design and the same section resists shearing for all directions. |
| Features and Benefits
| 1) Small size of bearing support makes it easy to secure edge distance. |
| Due to small size of support based on application of polyurethane disk of high elasticity and high strength, there are no problems like increase of pier coping caused by edge distance. The min size in Korea makes it possible to secure sufficient edge distance even without separate discussion on edge distance for most of bridges. Due to this advantage, there are a lot of examples for application of disk support at the time of replacement of bridge support of over 10 years old. Also, large-scale TP, too, positively uses this product as pier can be designed most economically. |
| 2) Excellent durability |
| Based on its excellent resistance characteristics against various ultimate circumstances such as ozone, chemical materials, air pollution, sea water, corrosion, human excreta, temperature change, its capability maintenance period is over 50years. As most of bridges has endurance period shorter than that of disk support, no maintenance or replacement is required except for any special case like natural disasters. There has not been a single report for replacement or maintenance of support on bridges with disk support applied throughout the world. |
| 3) Convenience in maintenance |
| Bridge substructure and disk support are connected with socket anchor so do not destroy pier coping section at the time of replacement. Also, polyurethane disk which is a critical part is exposed to outside so its condition of damage can be easily observed from outside with the naked eye. In addition, the simple structure of bearing support is advantageous in terms of maintenance and damage confirmation. |
| 4) The most economical bridge bearing support |
| It keeps the best economy among all bridge bearing support for earthquake-proof and base isolation which are produced, sold and constructed in Korea. This is due to the fact that application of polyurethane disk of high elasticity and high strength and the simple structure of the whole support leads to small size of bearing support and minimized use of steel quantity. |
